Background of the Project/ Challenge
The Emerging Markets Transition Investment (EMTI) project, coordinated by the Principles for Responsible Investing (PRI), consists of a series of roundtable discussions with industry experts targeted at accelerating transition investments and financing in EMDEs, the first of which shall primarily focus on enabling and growing the market for debt finance.
- An initiative to develop recommendations for the public and private sectors to catalyze debt finance for the net-zero transition in emerging markets, specifically in ASEAN
- This included a focus on enabling and growing the market for green/ transition/ sustainability-linked bonds
About the clients:
- The EU-ASEAN Business Council (EU-ABC) is the primary voice for European business within the ASEAN region
- Sustainable Development Investment Partnership (SDIP) aims to mobilise more capital for sustainable development through public-private collaboration and blended finance
- The UN-convened Net Zero Asset Owner Alliance (NZAOA) is a member-led initiative of institutional investors committed to transitioning their investment portfolios to net-zero GHG emissions by 2050
What We Did
As the Project Consultant, CSV conducted the following workstreams:
- Proactive planning for and attendance to the roundtable discussion.
- Prepared a “roundtable readout” that summarized the discussion and provided pathways forward.
- Summarized and synthesized the key observations and opinions expressed by roundtable participants on issues and challenges for transition finance in ASEAN emerging markets, then augmented findings with further desk research
- Assessed and developed potential solutions, based on results of the readout and additional research
- Engaged global and ASEAN regulators, power plant asset owners, investors, and other key stakeholders from around the world to discuss potential solutions
- Drafted the final report that detailed key challenges and potential near term solutions, as well as a list of stakeholders to engage to socialize findings and recommendations
Outcome
- Full report and press release with clients’ networks and engaged private and public stakeholders
- The report outlined near-term actions needed to simulate a multifold increase in emerging market climate transition investment
